Oh ya,
In the previous blog entry, I complete left out the skillset even till the end.
For a simple reason, normally , staff with integrity will hold themselves accountable to deliverable. They are likely to learn on the job and pick up the skillset as they go. Though, one must be mindful of the fact, if you want a nuclear scientist, a physics degree is a must have, it will be completely not fit to hire genetic engineer to run a particle collider like those is CERN.
In Malaysia, to demand a very strong technical person is hard to come by, most engineer only works 3-5 years, they are already hoping to be managing leader, but actually some were not even fit to be technician in both their thinking and behavior. Worst still, there are some school of thought (by some incompetent manager) that, one needs not to know well about the nature of the job to manage the team of specialist, thus , giving some of this half baked “experts” justification to sit on area of critical decision making.
Some like to think of themselves as young rising star . But to me, yes, there are only very few truly good ones, but majority are just so so. Once my brother said that
.. in Malaysia, there are more opportunities than expertise, but in other places, normally there are more expertise than opportunities, thus creating an even more competitive environments.
Now back to skills. Many staffs do not seek to upgrade what they know in the field, a few years, they went on to grab an MBA and that’s it, the rest is politics. In the state where I am living, we had many multinationals since 70s came here for manufacturing activities, as of today, we are still competing with country like China and Vietnam for the same manufacturing activities, but we need to import workforce from Myanmar , Bangladesh and Indonesia.
Why is that ?
