Lately, I got a few questions about what quality I  looked for when hiring someone, is skill important ?

For me, in priority ..

Integrity,Skill.

Integrity for me is the single most important factor of my hiring , anything else, is secondary.

A person with integrity will hold himself accountable to fulfill its duty & obligation to the company, its job function he is set out to do. With integrity, you can be sure the person will do the right thing even when on one is watching.

On another hand, without integrity, the person is likely to steal when no one is watching. He is likely to blame someone for his own wrongdoings, he is not likely to admit it but past the bug conveniently to someone else.

Having just one person without integrity is likely to bring down a whole team pf productive and innovative talents. Here is how to spot one, (No gender preference, I used “he”, but it does not mean all female workforce has 100% integrity)

  • The person is not likely to keep up with the skills, he felt he is the best and above the rest, because he felt he can get away with it even for a few silly mistakes. Also, an over confidence and octane boosted ego is normal the thread of incompetency.
  • The person is likely to be on sick leave quite often, especially critical timing, there is always something else.
  • The person always lowered other people to his own standard of mediocrity. Example is when he is caught being late to work, he immediately pointed other people in the group also do the same, why he is the only penalized ?
  • The do not make disclosure until last minute before the “bomb” about to go off. Yes, such people will keep crisis under wrapped as long as possible. When others started probing into his affair, he is fast to claim others violated his privacy and invaded his personal territory.
  • The person talks a lot his human right and his entitlement, yes, they do, such people normally steals time off, even though they stayed back late to claim overtime, but normally ended doing own things, abusing company provided convenient. In addition, when they are caught going home earlier than stated in company rule book, they are quick to point out how much they spent on this and that project, normally they probably helped filled the shipping form and nothing more.
  • Such people has a strong tendency to look for free goodies whenever there is one, free food , free seminar and all kinds of free gift, they may even fight for your share to show their nobleness. Do watch out if they fought for your share, there maybe something in future he wants from you.
  • Such people also keeps high emphasis the importance of relationship, on who they know to use backdoor method when there is one. While we know the importance of respect for individual as way to maintain good relationship, but we should not confuse that quality with sycophantic and appeasement behavior, like he can pull some string with little favor in return.
  • They tend to aim pretty high, in career term, even to the extent that do to tally with their own experience. They aim high for other reason, not because they want to lead the company to a new level, but they aiming to loot the goodies and entitlement, rub shoulder with the who and who . They like to play the same kind of game what the executives play and of course, they know someone (backdoor) that can get good bargains on the supply.
  • Another simple thing like going out for lunch, such people are least likely to bring their key along, they expect someone to drive them, yes, they always do. In Carpool, such people always on the look out for someone to exploit.
